chapter xiv: Wilhelm Güterwagen
part i: nature boy

The birthday boy gets a rare treat.

myeck's maternal grandfather was the renowned naturalist Wilhelm Güterwagen, who astounded the world of natural history with his discovery of a mated pair of Aepyornis, or Elephant Birds, guarding a nest containing a single egg deep in the forests of Madagascar. The animals, thought long-extinct, were quickly captured, and when Wilhelm's children attended a birthday party at the Embassy the next day, the kids were served the egg yolk as a special treat, while the adults ate the birds, splendidly prepared by the Embassy cooking staff.
Wilhelm recorded in his journal that the flesh tasted "rather like free-range chicken." His find was celebrated around the world.
